Gr. 8-11. College-bound Sophie is pregnant and feels alienated from her high-school social scene, from her single-parent mother, and sometimes even from her best friend, Joshua. Everyone is pressuring her to reveal her baby's father, but she refuses, content with her secret and reassured by the powerful dreams her unborn child is sending her. Yet danger is lurking. Someone knows who the father is and is threatening Sophie. This is a complex, multilayered story filled with magical realism but grounded in the experience of a single mother who is navigating through the daily world of parental disapproval as well as the tensions of multiracial dating and friendships. Sweeney probably deals with too many weighty issues superficially in this book, but there is no denying the compelling story and attractive main character. Sophie is stubborn, courageous, and intelligent, comfortable with herself and her decisions and with her plans for juggling college and a baby. Readers will empathize with her situation and find quiet satisfaction in her baby's birth. Frances Bradburn.
